Disabled Toilet Alarms PSA

Alarms come in all shapes and sizes. But today class, we’re going to talk about disabled toilet alarms, and this post features a special announcement to all site staff, especially cleaners.

That announcement is quite simply “STOP DOING THIS”

Disabled Refuge Red Pull Cord

Disabled toilet alarms that use a red cable like this have two handles attached to it. One is around waist level, to be pulled while someone is sitting down or standing up. The lower handle is supposed to hover just above the floor so that in the unfortunate even that someone falls in the toilet they can pull the handle on the floor.

Time for a quiz. If you are on the floor and can’t get up, which handle would you want to use?

A: The high-up one you can’t reach

B: The low-down one you also can’t reach because it’s been tied up.

Ah… Yes…

Now we know this isn’t just cleaners who we believe move this out of the way so it doesn’t get tangled in their mops. But we have one request for all of you reading this today.

If you see a pull cord tangled up like this, untangle it because you could really help someone who needs to use it.
