Installing a Dashcam

Installing a dashcam. Easy right?

The process of fitting a dashcam is a relatively easy process and one that is becoming more and more common. But it’s important to note that a dashcam is only as good as the image it records. Take a look at these examples.

This dashcam has been fitted so that the interior mirror mount obstructs over 50% of the right side

This example is too high. The installer has made a common mistake of making sure none of the bonnet is in view. This means that if there is a collision or impact you will miss the area that is affected. It also means that the wide angle lens will miss the left and right sides of the view as it is aimed too high. An easy way to gauge this is that there is too much sky in the image.

So what should you aim for?

Before mounting the dashcam onto the windscreen, you should first power it up and hold it in the position to check that it is going to get the best view in that position and that it isn’t obstructed. It’s also important to note the direction of cables, SD cards and camera removal so that space can be allowed around the camera.

Generally, the horizon should sit in the middle of the view. When the camera is mounted, adjust the camera so that it is level with the horizon or bonnet and don’t aim it too high. It’s unlikely you are going to be hit by a plane!

If your dashcam has a separate GPS module, mount it to the windscreen with the cable attached so that you don’t mount it too far away. Ensure to note the direction that needs to face the sky.

Next up, it’s time to hide that cable. You can hide almost all of the cables which make for a tidier look, but also a safer installation as those loose cables could get tangled up or cause a distraction while driving.

Note where you are going to power the dashcam from, usually the 12v port in the centre console.

Take the cable and run it under the headliner where it meets the windscreen, don’t be afraid to carefully pull off the A-pillar plastic and route the cable down there, every vehicle is slightly different, so after you have then run the cable down the door seal, it’s up to you to find the best and safest way to get the cable from the door to the power point.

Make sure that if the cable is crossing over the pedals, it cannot drop or fall while driving!

Last but not least

Now you are all ready to go! But before you set off seeking new dangers; It’s important to set the correct date and time, if the date or time is incorrect, some insurers or crime investigations may have issues using it. Now is also the best time to get used to the controls. It would be useless if you need to save a video file and do not know how to and the file is overwritten. Read the operating manual and give it a test!
